Albion Baseball nets six all-MIAA picks

The Albion College baseball team was rewarded for its third place finish in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association – its best since 2007 – by placing six student athletes on the all-MIAA teams released today by Director of Media Relations Sheila Morrigan.

Pitcher Mitch Shedlowsky was a first team pick. Representing Albion on the all-MIAA second team were catcher Jordyn Finney, left fielder Sean Haddlesey, second baseman Kellan Huang, third baseman Drew Olszewski and shortstop Joe Turnbull.

All statistics listed below are for MIAA games unless noted.

A senior from Waterford, Mich., who prepped at Mott High School, Shedlowsky was one of two pitchers with six victories. In 46 innings, he achieved a 2.93 earned run average, allowing 15 earned runs on 40 hits and 13 walks.

In a look at the NCAA Division III statistical leaders for the entire season, Shedlowsky is 16th with five complete games this season.

Finney, a junior from Oxford, Mich., who prepped at Cranbrook High School, and Turnbull, a senior from Lake Orion, Mich., were acknowledged for their defensive skills.

Finney helped the pitching staff by throwing out nine of 13 runners trying to steal and he was able to throw behind runners, as well.

Eight of Turnbull’s 18 hits went for extra bases, and he drove in 18 runs to tie him for second-most on the team. Defensively, Turnbull achieved a .952 fielding percentage.

Olszewski, a sophomore from Kentwood, Mich., was Albion’s leading hitter a .365. He slugged six doubles, a pair of triples and drove in 13 runs, but his metrics when on base – he was 16-of-17 in stolen base attempts – kept the pressure on the opponents.

Haddlesey, a first-year student from Ann Arbor, Mich., and Huang, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., hit .340 or better. Huang was Albion’s leader in doubles (10) and RBI (29) in addition to achieving a 2-2 record with a save in seven appearances on the mound.

Albion, 17-11 in MIAA games, will travel to Hope College for a 4 p.m. Wednesday game in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. After the Wednesday game, the remainder of the tournament will shift to Nicolay Field at Adrian College.
