History will be made for the United Soccer League (USL) over the weekend, as the fierce rivalry between Louisville City FC and Indy Eleven will be broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The match is this Saturday, April 6, at 4 p.m. ET. This marks the first time a USL match will be aired on network television, showcasing one of the America’s most intense rivalries to its largest audience yet.

Dubbed the “LIPAFC” or Louisville–Indianapolis Proximity Association Football Contest, this rivalry began in 2015 during the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. It has since evolved into one of the most eagerly anticipated matchups in the league, symbolizing the passionate support and competitive spirit of both clubs and their fans.

Matchup: Louisville City FC vs Indy Eleven
Location: Lynn Family Stadium, Louisville, Kentucky
Date & Time: Saturday, April 6, 2024 – 4:00 p.m. ET
Broadcast: CBS TV Network, Paramount+

The LIPAFC was conceived by supporter groups from both teams, the Lou Coopers from Louisville and the Brickyard Battalion from Indy. Despite starting in separate leagues, with Indy Eleven in the North American Soccer League in 2014 and Louisville City joining the USL Championship a year later, their meeting in the U.S. Open Cup laid the groundwork for a fierce competition. Since Indy Eleven’s move to the USL Championship in 2018, the rivalry has only intensified, with 21 encounters across all competitions to date.

Louisville City FC currently leads with 10 wins, while Indy Eleven has clinched five victories, alongside six draws. The rivalry’s most memorable moment came during the 2019 USL Championship Playoffs Eastern Conference Final, where the teams produced a thrilling match that stood out as a highlight of the league’s postseason history.

Adding to the rivalry’s intensity, five players have represented both clubs over the years, including Dylan Mares of Louisville City and Tyler Gibson of Indy Eleven, who will both have the opportunity to face their former team in the upcoming match.

The rivalry also boasts a record for attendance, with the last match at Louisville City FC’s Lynn Family Stadium drawing the largest crowd in the series’ history. With 13,248 fans in attendance, the game set a high mark that could be surpassed in future encounters, especially with Indy Eleven’s plans to open a new 20,000-capacity stadium at Eleven Park in 2025.

As the USL continues to grow, the broadcast on CBS represents a significant milestone for the league, and American soccer, as it will bring one of the great rivalries in the game to a national audience, and set the stage for an unforgettable showdown between Louisville City FC and Indy Eleven.
