Hey internet, it’s your old friend Dominic here with the All American Casino Guide, a channel dedicated to providing you with all the tips, tricks, tutorials and trivia you need to know about casinos and casino games. If you’re new here, go ahead and subscribe to the channel!
Today we’re going to countdown the top 10 gambling movies we think you need to watch. Now, there are tons of great gambling movies out there, and these are mostly quite recent and modern films. We might do another video on older pre-90s classics that you should check out, so let us know if you’d want that by leaving a comment or slamming that like-button to show your appreciation. Without further ado, let’s get started.
NUMBER 10: 21
A gambling movie list can never be complete without “21”. Depicting the real-life story of six MIT students who made millions in Vegas after becoming expert Blackjack card counters.
NUMBER 9: MISSISSIPPI GRIND
Ben Mendelson and Ryan Reynolds team up in a good old southern gambling movie, traveling across the south from casino to casino, including some rootin, tootin, riverboat action, trying to cover a large debt.
This is a full on gamblers movie, with various games depicted in some real nail-biting scenes. You’ve got poker, you’ve got craps, you’ve got blackjack, you’ve got horse-racing, just to name a few. If you’re even a little into gambling or casinos, you’ll definitely be into Mississippi Grind.
NUMBER 8: LOCK, STOCK & TWO SMOKING BARRELS
As many gambling movies go, this one is also about a character who majorly loses a bet which leaves them with a huge debt hanging over their head. While gambling isn’t necessarily that prominent in this movie aside from the poker scenes, the concept of chance/luck and gambling with life is a critical and evident theme that runs throughout.
NUMBER 7: UNCUT GEMS
This is probably the most intense anxiety-inducing-adrenaline-fueled-heart-pumping of a movie ever made. Adam Sandler takes a break from his cringey comedy roles to actually ACT, for a change, and plays a weedy Jewish hustler who’d do anything for money.
The real cherry on the cake is the finale, which consists of a ridiculously intense sports-betting scene that will leave you absolutely without any nails on your hands.
NUMBER 6: ROUNDERS
Young Matt Damon and at the time relevant Edward Norton (I forgot that dude still existed) star in this classic gambling movie about high stakes poker players hitting the tables hoping to pay off some nasty loan sharks. It features some of the most intense poker games to date and is an absolute must-watch for anyone that has even a remote interest in anything even resembling poker.
NUMBER 5: RAIN MAN
Probably one of the most iconic movies of all time, there’s not much to say about Rain Man that hasn’t already been said. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman play the Babbitt Brothers, and one of them turns out to be an autistic savant who happens to be a naturally extremely competent card counter. Well, you can guess what happens next: a cross country journey of a lot of card counting, and a lot of winning.
NUMBER 4: CASINO
Martin Scorsese’s Casino might not have much actual gambling in it, but its the ultimate Casino story. It’s oozing with a good old Casino atmosphere and you really get to see the inner workings of the dirty, gangster infested establishment.
Arguably the best scene of the movie is when the casino owners bust a pair of card counters who are using an elaborate contraption to communicate with each other. Instead of kicking them out, they resort to some more… extreme measures. Needless to say, it’s not for the faint of heart.
NUMBER 3: HARD EIGHT
This movie follows veteran gambler Sydney played by Philip Baker Hall. We got some slot action at the beginning of the film, showing some sort of scammy money-making scheme of circulating the same banknote. A couple of later scenes feature some intense dice throws, on top of a ludicrous appearance by legendary Philip Seymour Hoffman who plays an insane gambler, is easily the funniest scene in the movie.
NUMBER 2: CASINO ROYALE
You can’t start and end a discussion about gambling without mentioning Casino Royale. It’s got great action, great poker, a great villain and it’s a great time. I highly recommended if you happen to be one of the few who’s never seen it.
NUMBER 1: MOLLY’S GAME
There are some really interesting characters in here, as you get to see a variety of top-notch poker players with all sorts of personalities, and of course some incredibly intense poker scenes.
