It was heartbreak in east Texas for Week 3, as the Bearcats fell in the closing seconds 29-28 at DeKalb. The DeKalb road contest was scheduled last minute as a make-up game following the cancellation of the Week 2 game against All Saints.
The Bearcats jumped out to an 8-0 lead after Asten Kirby returned the opening kickoff 89 yards.
The Cats converted the 2-point conversion on a swinging gate play to grab the early advantage. The Cats defense held the Bears out of the end zone throughout the first period.
In the second quarter, DeKalb quarterback Kaleb Dooley scored on a 16-yard keeper. Following the 2-point conversion, Pilot Point and DeKalb were tied 8-8 with 8:57 to go before halfime.
On the ensuing drive, a 49-yard, tackle-breaking run by Ish Harris set the Cats knocking at the door on the DeKalb 2-yard line. On the next play, Harris found the end zone on a 2-yard burst for the TD. The PAT was good for a 15-8 Bearcat lead with 8:10 to go before halfime. Harris averaged almost 9 yards per tote on the game, gaining 141 yards on 16 carries. Wyatt Smith would add a 3-yard QB sneak later in the quarter as PPHS carried a 22-8 lead into the halfime break. Smith finished the game with 2 rushing TDs, and went 11-23 passing for 123 yards.
Both teams played to a scoreless third period before the fourth quarter fireworks erupted. The Bears marched the ball down the field with a clock-consuming drive that was capped by a Dooley QB keeper on an inverted Wishbone set. The TD and subsequent 2-point conversion trimmed the Bearcat lead to 22-16 with 11:06 left in the game.
DeKalb forced a quick 3-and-out by the Cats offense on the next possession, and went on another scoring march. The Bears scored on a sweep play and the PAT hit the right upright and fell across the crossbar for a 23-22 DeKalb advantage. On the next drive, a 30-yard run by Harris moved the ball into Bear territory. Following a pass play from Smith to Crew Chandler, Smith snuck the ball into the end zone once again. The pass for 2 did not reach the end zone, as Pilot Point held a 28-23 lead.
The next kickoff brought quite a bit of debate among fans. DeKalb’s Winky Williams seemed to have touched his knee down on the return, but popped back up and took the ball to the Cats 30-yard line. Despite complaints by the Bearcat sideline, the play stood and the Bears set up shop on a short field. With 9 seconds to play, DeKalb found the end zone on a desperation pass play from 20 yards out. The run for 2 failed and the Bears held a 29-28 lead.
The Cats had some for one Hail Mary play that fell incomplete to end thegame. Chandler was the leading PPHS receiver, with 6 catches for 94 yards. Curly Brockman and Ryan Riney led the Cats with 13 tackles each. Alex Puga and Harris had 10 stops each. Pilot Point will host powerhouse Gunter this Friday at Massey Stadium.
