CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (SESN) – The Chattanooga Mocs are hard at work preparing for an exciting 2024 football season. With the roster largely on campus, the Mocs are gearing up for a campaign that promises to showcase their strength and depth across all positions.

Last season, the Mocs finished with an overall record of 8-5 and a 6-2 mark in the Southern Conference. The season had its highs and lows, starting with a tough loss to North Alabama but quickly rebounding with wins over Kennesaw State and The Citadel. Chattanooga demonstrated their prowess with a dominant 48-3 victory over The Citadel and a significant 47-24 triumph against Samford.

The team faced challenges mid-season, including a narrow 50-52 loss to Western Carolina during Homecoming. However, they bounced back with key wins over Mercer and ETSU. The regular season concluded with a hard-fought game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. An exciting road match on a big stage for Chattanooga.

Chattanooga’s journey continued into the FCS Playoffs, where they secured a wild victory over Austin Peay but fell to Furman in the next round. This year, the Mocs are favored to win the SoCon title, receiving five first-place votes in the preseason poll. With a strong roster and a tradition of excellence, Chattanooga is poised for a memorable season.

Importantly, senior quarterback Chase Artopoeus is returning for this season. In 2023 he threw for 2.672 yards, completing 187 of 298 pass attempts, with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is credited with three 300-yard contests, and a high of 399 with five touchdowns against Western Carolina. He also had multiple touchdown throws in six games: WCU (5), Kennesaw State (3), The Citadel (3), at North Alabama (2), ETSU (2) and Furman (2).

The defensive line will play a pivotal role, led by returning starters Marlon Taylor and Quay Wiggles. Taylor has been named the Southern Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The defensive front boasts significant depth, with seniors, sophomores, and talented newcomers ready to make their mark.
