Sometimes it’s really nice to just play some fun youth soccer games. The game was still competitive but had different age groups playing. Some were older (U15, U16) but some were also younger kids (U13, U14).
Playing this kind of game allows me to try new things and be creative, especially with goalkeeper distribution. I also really like it becuase I didn’t know each player I was playing with. This made me think and adapt on the field to each player’s skill level and abilities.
If you watch until the end of the video, it shows you why it’s so important to catch and hold the ball as a kid goalie. Keeping possession of the soccer ball does 2 things: 1) you keep possession of the ball and don’t give the other team a corner kick and 2) you stop the other team from being able to capitalize on any rebounds.
This is what happened to me in this case. The soccer ball came in and I tried to catch and hold but it came out. I then did a split save to stop an easy goal from being scored. However, the rebound went to the other team so they had possession. They were able to get a shot off from within the box. It was a great shot but wouldn’t have happened if I had held onto the ball.
This is the reason I like playing so much in games. You can do a lot of goalkeeper training and drills but it’s a different feeling in a game situation.
