Indy preseason pick to win GLVC football title

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis (Indy) was voted atop the 2021 preseason Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) football coaches’ poll, the league office announced on Friday.

The preseason poll is selected by the league’s eight head coaches. The coaches are cannot vote for their own team.

Indy received five of eight first-place votes to top the conference vote. Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo. earned the remaining three first-place votes.

Rounding out the top five in polling are Truman State University, Missouri S&T, and McKendree University. Southwest Baptist University, William Jewell College, and Quincy University round out the remaining bottom three.

The Indy Greyhounds won their seventh GLVC football title this past April, defeating Truman State in the inaugural league title game. This marks the best performance in conference history.

There are a few contributing factors to Indy receiving the top vote. Returning quarterback Bryce Stancombe, who is back for his seventh year, threw 900 yards and 10 touchdowns in three appearances. Head coach Chris Keevers enters his third season leading the program. Key crucial returns in offense, defense, and special teams will also help the Greyhounds in the upcoming season.

Lindenwood won the title in 2019 in its lone season in the conference, but they did not participate this spring. Returns include quarterback Cade Brister and linebacker Drew Seers. Brister, the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year for 2019, tossed 39 touchdowns in 13 contests, averaging 290.7 yards per game. His yardage total at the end of the season was 3,779 yards. Seers recorded 175 tackles, 3 QB hits, and two fumble recoveries.
