We have a 16-game slate in the majors Saturday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET. There are a lot good matchups happening across the league that will feature a ton of betting implications.
Oakland Athletics -1.5 (-105)
The A’s are in the thick of a playoff race; the Rangers are absolutely not. So before we even dive into the numbers on this one, we’ve got the clear motivational edge.
There’s no value left on the moneyline – Oakland sits around -190 to -200 at most books. But, with such an edge on both the mound and at the plate, I like getting nearly even money on the A’s to top Texas by two or more runs.
James Kaprielian will start for Oakland, and for those who don’t remember, he was the key piece in return from the Yankees as part of the Sonny Gray trade. It took Kaprielian a bit longer to reach the big leagues than perhaps A’s fans anticipated, but he’s burst onto the scene and been a really nice piece in the middle of their rotation. Kaprielian has made 14 starts for the Athletics, posting a 6-4 record with a modest 3.22 ERA. He’s also striking out over a batter per inning as a rookie, which isn’t an easy feat – especially in a notoriously offensive division in the AL West
Two comparable teams face off in this Saturday matinee matchup.
Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds will pitch against Matt Moore of the Philadelphia Phillies. Both teams are in contention for playoff spots, so this series and duel may prove to be huge as the MLB season approaches its ending.
Luis Castillo is a pretty volatile arm with good stuff and moderate peripherals. Matt Moore is subpar to put it lightly, so is there any advantage to betting on him? Is Castillo going to have one of his outings when he cannot locate his off-speed pitches and gives up eight earned, like he did in Cleveland his last time out?
Blue Jays’ Starter
Hyun Jin Ryu will get the start for the Jays, making his 23rd start of the season. He will be going for his 12th win of the season, which would tie him back up with Chris Bassitt of the A’s for the AL lead. Overall, Ryu is 11-5 with a 3.62 ERA, and a matching 3.63 FIP. Over his 126.2 innings, he has 103 strikeouts to just 26 walks, with 14 home runs allowed as well.
Ryu has faced the Mariners once this year, pitching the Canada Day game in Buffalo. In that one, Ryu had one of his worst outings of the season, lasting just 4.0 innings while allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walk. He also allowed 2 home runs in that one, one to Jake Fraley and one to Shed Long Jr., who is currently on the Injured List.
Mariners’ Starter
The Mariners will counter with Yusei Kikuchi, the Mariners’ prized international free agent signing prior to the 2019 season. Now in his 3rd season with the Mariners, Kikuchi is showing the promise that landed him a $43m guarantee from the Mariners. Through 21 starts this season, the first time All Star is 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA. Over 125.1 innings, Kikuchi has 135 strikeouts, while allowing 43 walks and 22 home runs.
Kikuchi went head to head against Ryu on Canada Day, and he earned the win with one of his best starts of the year. He made it through 7 innings, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 6. The lone run came on a Semien solo home run to lead off the game.
