Yankees score 4 runs in the btm of the 2nd inning on a RBI single from Joe Girardi and RBI Doubles from Derek Jeter and Luis Sojo to give David Wells a comfortable 4-0 lead going into the 3rd inning. Mets answer back with 3 runs of their own in the Top of the 3rd including Bernard Gilkey’s 7th HR of the season a 2-run shot. but just wasn’t enough as David Wells with great control of his pitches, pitching a solid 8 innings giving up 3 runs on 6 Mets hits while striking out 5 and walking none, enough for Wells to earn his 8th win of the year (8-3)
Armando Reynoso, pitching only 1.2 innings gets his first loss of the season (5-1) as Mets rookie right hander Corey Lidle comes in relief in the 2nd inning. Mariano Rivera comes in to close the door on the Mets in the 9th to even up the subway series at one game a piece giving Rivera his 22nd save of the 1997 season.
