Reports College Football Playoff heading toward 12 teams

The College Football Playoff appears headed for expansion. The CFP working group — comprised of SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson and Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick — will recommend Thursday a 12-team model to be instituted at some point in the future, according to multiple reports. The expanded field would include the six highest-ranked FBS conference champions in addition to six at-large teams. The College Football Playoff has been at four teams since its inception in 2014, and is under contract to utilize that format through the 2025 season. It was not immediately clear if an expanded field could be instituted before the end of the current contract, though a full announcement is expected later Thursday. In late April, the CFP announced it had reviewed dozens of scenarios for expansion, from six teams to 16. At the time, playoff officials indicated no expansion beyond four teams was imminent. However, momentum has shifted in recent weeks toward a more inclusive playoff field. In the seven years of the CFP, four teams — Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Ohio State — have accounted for 19 of the 28 playoff slots. In addition, the Pac-12 has been shut out of the playoff for four consecutive seasons. No Group of 5 school has ranked higher than eighth in the final CFP standings. The 2022 CFP National Championship Game takes place Jan. 10 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Goodyear Cotton Bowl and Capital One Orange Bowl will host semifinals on Dec. 31.
