Max Pinto homered with two outs in bottom of the ninth inning to give Samford an 8-6 victory over Western Carolina and the Southern Conference championship Sunday in Greenville, S. C. The Bulldogs (35-22) homered twice in the inning to erase a 6-4 deficit, as Towns King had tied the game with his own two-run shot moments earlier. After Taylor Garris reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Pinto blasted an 0-1 pitch from Catamounts reliever Jack Snyder over the center-field wall for the victory. Samford earned its third SoCon baseball title, and first since 2018. The Bulldogs will learn where they will begin the postseason during the NCAA Regional Selection Show, which airs at 11 a.m. Monday on ESPN2.“There’s not a better way for this group to win,” Samford coach Casey Dunn said. “With everything they’ve gone through, the adversity of the season, the ups and downs of not playing well, playing OK, and just everything that we’ve dealt with, this was a fitting end to be able to finish late like that.”King, who went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs on Sunday, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Pinto, pitcher Hamp Skinner, second baseman Brooks Carlson, third baseman Will David and designated hitter Tyler McManus. Western Carolina (28-21) led 5-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before Samford plated three runs on an RBI single by King and a two-run single by Garris. The Catamounts tacked on a run in the top of the ninth on Zach Ketterman’s RBI double to take a 6-4 lead into Samford’s final at-bat. Samford had 11 hits in all, including three each by King and Ryan Crockett. The Bulldogs’ other run came on David’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. Carson Cupo (9-0) earned the win for Samford after pitching the ninth. Skinner started the game and allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings before Western Carolina added four off the Bulldogs’ bullpen.
