South Alabama added its third former SEC skill-position player of the offseason on Saturday. Former Mississippi State running back Kareem Walker announced he will play his final college season with the Jaguars. Walker (6-foot-2, 225 pounds) appeared in two games the last two seasons with the Bulldogs after a year in junior college and two years at Michigan. Walker announced his commitment via Twitter:Originally from Irvington, N. J., Walker was a three-star recruit in Michigan’s 2016 signing class. He redshirted as a true freshman, then rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in five games for the Wolverines in 2017. Walker spent the 2018 season at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College, rushing for 207 yards and a touchdown in seven games. He sat out the 2019 season at Mississippi State for academic reasons, then played in two games (with no carries) last season before leaving the team and entering the NCAA transfer portal in early November. Walker has already graduated from Mississippi State, so he will be immediately eligible at South Alabama even though he is a second-time transfer. He will be able to play a sixth college season after the NCAA granted an additional year to all Division I athletes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. South Alabama has a great need at running back, after leading rusher Carlos Davis was indefinitely suspended following a February arrest on drug-related charges and subsequently left the team. The Jaguars finished the spring with Terrion Avery, AJ Phillips, Jared Wilson and Tank Miller — who combined for 391 yards and two touchdowns in 2020 — competing for carries. Walker joins quarterback Jake Bentley (South Carolina) and wide receiver Allen Dailey (Kentucky) as incoming South Alabama transfers who once played in the SEC. His former Mississippi State teammate, center James Jackson, has also transferred to USA. Overall, South Alabama has secured 10 Division I transfers since coach Kane Wommack took over in December. In addition to Walker, Bentley, Dailey and Jackson, the Jaguars have also added offensive linemen Antawn Lewis (Louisiana Tech), Anterrious Gray (North Texas), Justin Stevens (Michigan State) and Ja’Chai Baker (Southeast Missouri), linebacker Jamal Brooks (Missouri) and long snapper Travis Drosos (Colorado). South Alabama opens the 2021 season at home Sept. 4 vs. Southern Miss.
