Development of Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled. What happened and what does it mean for the potential future of the game? Special thanks to Darkfire Heroes for sponsoring this video. Download Darkfire Heroes for FREE:

The Lord of the Rings MMO was originally revealed in 2018 by Athlon Games, a developer and publisher of free-to-play consoles and PC games. The company had signed a long term licensing agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises to make the LotR MMO. At the time, they said they where working with an unannounced studio to develop the game.

One year later, in the Summer of 2019, we learned Amazon Games was that studio. They would be the primary developer and had a team of industry veterans very familiar with MMO and live service games. With members having worked on: World of Warcraft, Everquest, Rift, Destiny, and Defiance.
The LOTR MMO would be an ‘Engrossing New AAA Experience’ set “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe”.

Last December, Athlon Games parent company, Leyou Technologies, was purchased by Tencent. The following contract negotiations failed to come to any agreement between Tencent and Amazon, and as a result the MMO’s development has been halted.

This news is a huge bummer for anyone who was looking forward to a new LotR game, but also for fans of the genre as yet another big budget MMO gets canceled.

Note: Most footage in this video is a mixture of trailers from other Lord of the Rings games (War in the North, Shadow of War, LOTRO). As there was no official footage released for the now canceled LotR MMO.
