Cut Mel Tucker some slack. He inherited a Michigan State program at the worst possible time last year and still managed to upset Michigan and Northwestern. Now with a full and regular offseason under his belt, the Spartans should be much better (at least statistically) in 2021. Michigan State was in desperate need of a QB and Tucker got one by landing Temple transfer Anthony Russo. He will lead an offense that averaged just 18 PPG last year, but returns practically everyone from that unit. The defense was horrendous when it came to PPG (35.1) but in all the other categories was mediocre. Expect all the numbers to improve as this defense should be very physical as one would expect under Mel Tucker. The Spartans do have a difficult schedule with games against Northwestern, Miami, and all of their East opponents. While a bowl game does not seem likely, improvement certainly does. Meaning 2022 could be the breakthrough year for Mel Tucker in East Lansing.
