Northwestern surprised the country last year by going 7-2, winning the Big Ten West, and rising as high as #8 in the country.
While the Wildcats will not have the same success as they did in 2020, they will still be a very tough out for every team in the Big Ten as long as Pat Fitzgerald remains their head coach. The offense returns three starters in 2021 and loses tons of production from last year. That includes their QB, three of their top four rushers, and four of their top five pass catchers. Ryan Hilinski now steps in at QB after transferring from South Carolina. He will be tasked with improving a passing offense that ranked 96th nationally last year averaging less than 200 PYPG. The defense will once again be the strength of the team but they will still take a minor step back after losing leaders in Blake Gallagher snd Paddy Fisher. After allowing just 15.9 PPG (fifth nationally) and just 341.2 YPG (22nd nationally) Northwestern will rely heavily on the strength of their secondary led by Brandon Joseph who had six interceptions last year. The Wildcats have a very favorable start to their schedule where anything less than a 4-0 start would be a disappointment. A rough four game stretch against Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin will determine whether this team is a West Title contender again or if they will go to a mediocre bowl game in 2021.
