After a one year stint in the ACC, Notre Dame is back as an independent for the 2021 season. The Fighting Irish went 10-2 and made their second College Football Playoff appearance in the last three seasons. While another CFP appearance does not seem likely in 2021, a New Years Six Bowl appearance is absolutely attainable. Notre Dame’s season will ultimately come down to their offense. After losing 30 game winner Ian Book at QB, Notre Dame will look to Wisconsin transfer Jack Coan to lead the offense. He will be paired with star RB Kyren Williams who rushed for 1,125 yards and 13 TDs as a freshman last year. But Notre Dame does have to replace four offensive linemen and Coan will quickly have to build chemistry with a relatively new core of WRs. The Fighting Irish’s strength will definitely be on defense. Brian Kelly made one of the best offseason hires by bringing in Marcus Freeman as DC from Cincinnati. Freeman inherits a defense that does lose star LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, but does return six starters that ranked 25th nationally in total defense last year. Kyle Hamilton returns as the leading tackler from last year and as one of the best safeties in the nation to lead the defense, but the rest of the secondary still needs a little work. A dangerous five game stretch against Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, USC, and North Carolina will ultimately decide Notre Dame’s season. If the Fighting Irish exceed expectations in that stretch, they will be in the Playoff hunt going into November. If not, they will have to settle for a NY6 Bowl or even one in a lower tier. Many expect the latter, but one thing is for sure: Don’t count out Brian Kelly and don’t doubt the Irish.
