The National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) has delivered two-year suspensions for two former players of the Maryland Bobcats FC. The suspensions come as a result of the use of racist and homophobic language during a match, which NISA described in a release as a severe violation of the league’s codes of conduct.
According to the release from the club, the accusations came to light on June 17th, following an away game against LA Force. One player allegedly used a racial slur, while another allegedly used a derogatory slur aimed at match officials. Upon being notified by NISA, the Maryland Bobcats FC launched an internal investigation and “confirmed that the report was accurate regarding the racial and derogatory slurs from the accused individuals,” said the release.

Maryland Bobcats FC acted promptly upon confirmation of the events, releasing both players with immediate effect. “In addition to their release, we will recommend classes and resources to help both players understand the importance of their error in hopes of them learning from their mistake,” said the release.
The NISA further reinforced its commitment to maintaining an anti-racist and equitable environment within the league. “We are an anti-racist and equity-driven organization, and I commend Maryland on its quick decision,” said NISA Commissioner John Prutch in the league release.

Prutch explained that their decision-making process involved consulting their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee to ensure an all-around fair and informed decision. He asserted, “There will never be room in this league for the actions and attitudes displayed last weekend, and there shouldn’t be any in our game, sports, or society.”
