Raw footy from our prelims matches at Cup this year, unfortunately things didn’t go our way and we didn’t make the Sunday cut by a few points. As always we are appreciative of the NXL giving us the first match of the morning on Thursday & Friday!
Our 1st match was against Just Us who we played twice this season @ Vegas & Philly. We went down 0-2 early to them but then we found some early kills in the next few points and pulled out a comeback victory 3-2.
Our 2nd match was against Texas Phalanx, it was our first time playing them all season. We got a questionable major penalty on a bang bang snake play which was brutal but we played on our heels during that whole match which wasn’t the way to play this layout, why we lost 2-3.
Our 3rd match bright & early on Friday morning was against a new team from Canada called Swoop, they had a fair share of fellow Canadian refs on our field to help them out. We won the first point then got another major penalty on the second point that was incorrect but it is what it is, & we let them continue to push the field on us every point after that while we sat on our heels. Our heads were down & out which led to us getting smoked 1-6.
With nothing to lose but a prayer for a 2-2 wildcard spot , we needed a win in our final prelims match against one more Canadian team that we didn’t play this season, the Royal City Seadogs. We watched them play a bunch in Chicago and almost met up with them in the finals of Chicago when we got 4th. We came out strong against them in the first point but then we let the next 2 points slip away, once we knew where they were running off the board we dialed in a few OTB kills that kept us rolling to a 6-3 win.
Winning this match was what we needed before ending the season. It was our first go in D2 this year so we were proud to finish 8th in season rankings. We will be returning to D2 for next season which is perfect for us to fine tune our system for one more season before going Semi-Pro.
