The Detroit Lions get a defensive makeover in our latest 7-round mock draft

Lions fans have been craving this pick all offseason and may have snapped up Aidan Hutchinson. But all signs point to Hutchinson being the No. 1 Jaguars. With Urban Meyer gone, the Jaguars have a strong front office that has nowhere else to go for a player like Hutchinson.

In this mock design, I wanted to take a unique approach. It’s a mix of what Lions should, should and must do.

With QBs in this league not as good as they have been in years past, the Lions could forego picking one QB in the entire draft and instead build a young defensive core that could develop into one of the best defensive cores in the league.

Round 1 Round 2: Ahmad Gardner, CB, Cincinnati

Yes, Gardner has enough talent and “gravy” to be a first-choice CB, like his proposed first-round pick for new teammate Jeff Okudah in 2020, but in a pass-heavy league, you’ll never have Enough good corners. That and Jeff Okudah didn’t grow into who we thought he would be after finishing third overall in 2020. Okudah might eventually find his form, which would make this pick better, but until then, they’re going to have to operate like they didn’t have CB1, well, because they didn’t.

We could have chosen Walker, Thibodeau or even Johnson at No. 2, but every player has some issues, and if you choose No. 2, you can’t hope and pray you have to make a safe bet, and that’s the sauce.

Round 1, 32nd pick: Boye Mafe, EDGE, Minnesota

He’s not in the same class as the rest of the rushers in the class, but Maffei is getting a lot of interest in the back end of the first round. Mafe has the potential to be a very capable full-back in this league. After missing out on Hutchinson and picking Gardner at No. 2, Maffei is a safe bet here, giving Detroit more safety and flexibility in their options.

Sauce Gardner is a must try in my opinion and has some concerns with some of the other top rushers at #2. Mafe and Gardner’s No. 2 and No. 32 selections filled a huge gap in both positions.

Round 2, 34th pick: Jaquan Brisker, S, Penn State

Safety is a big concern for this team, and while DeShon Elliott is in the building, that shouldn’t stop the Lions from picking one of the best safety players in the entire draft. H
